LAMB LIMELIGHT: Ben Doyle

Welcome to the next edition of Lamb Limelight.

This week, Ben Doyle is our spotlighted barrister.

Tell us a little about yourself and your practice.
“I grew up in Bristol and came to London after spells in Cambridge, Switzerland and Brighton. I practise predominantly in property and commercial law. I keep my practice deliberately quite broad because I like keeping on top of various areas of law and this enables me to deal with cases that involve multiple areas of law.”

What is your first memory of wanting to be a barrister?
“I always liked the idea of having a profession and barristers always seemed slightly mysterious and cool! I did mooting at university and loved the challenge of delving into case law and trying to come up with persuasive and creative arguments and then trying to persuade the judge that I was right.”

Is there a certain case that stands out to you in your career? If yes, why?
“Lots of cases are memorable, for good and bad reasons! Possibly my favourite memory of a case was doing an appeal on a boundary dispute in the Upper Tribunal. My opponent asked before the hearing if I was really going to run a certain (fairly niche) point. The judge found the point so compelling that she said she didn’t need to hear from me, dismissed the appeal, and asked if I would like costs. The ideal hearing!’”

What’s your favourite thing about being a barrister?
“There’s no doubt that it’s a hard job, but it’s also an awesome job. My favourite thing is probably the variety. Every day is different and involves a new challenge.”

What do you do to relax?
“Spending time with friends and family, cooking and reading.”

If you weren’t a barrister, what would you be?
“Tough question! Probably a chef, in finance, or running my own business.”
