“I have now reached the last week of first six, which means I am due to be on my feet in only a few days (once I receive my provisional practising certificate). As exciting as that is, it is surprising how quickly this first six months has flown by!
Since my last post, I have started my second seat with James Culverwell. This seat has been slightly different to my first. I have seen and undertaken more insolvency work, such as applications to set aside statutory demands, freezing injunctions, and winding up petitions. However, I have also had lots of opportunities to go to court with other members of Chambers on property, probate and personal injury matters. It has been particularly helpful to attend court with junior members of Chambers on possession, landlord and tenant, and credit hire hearings, as this is the sort of work I am due to undertake once I am on my feet.
As well as lots of time in court, I have also completed plenty of paperwork. This has included drafting undertakings, skeleton arguments, particulars of claim, and producing research notes on costs and limitation points. I have also completed my first written and oral assessments for Chambers.
During February, I completed my pupils’ advocacy and practice management course with Middle Temple. This was a two-week intensive course in which we received workshops on witness handling, skeleton arguments, ethics, accountancy, oral submissions, BMIF, opening and closing speeches, and clerking. Alongside the course, I undertook some work for Chambers. This included producing an exhibit bundle to accompany a witness statement, and a skeleton argument for a trial involving unpaid energy bills.
Following this, I volunteered at the Inn’s New Practitioners Programme advocacy day where I acted as a witness. This was also a very valuable experience and allowed me to pick up even more tips and tricks not only from the trainers but the junior practitioners too.
Last month I spoke on a panel at Middle Temple, ‘Straight from the Pupil’s Mouth’. This was a successful evening filled with lots of stories from interviews and the first few months of pupillage, as well as important questions from attendees. I hope everyone who attended found the evening insightful— my inbox remains open for anyone who has further questions about pupillage and the application process!
While I await the receipt of my PPC, I look forward to second six and undertaking a variety of civil and property work!”
