International Women’s Week 2023 at Lamb Chambers. Spotlight: Hannah Laithwaite

Lamb Chambers are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day, a global awareness campaign that aims to celebrate the achievement of women all over the world, bring awareness to gender equality, and take a stand against gender bias. Throughout the week, Lamb Chambers will be highlighting women barristers from our set who will share their insights in how they pursued a career in law.

Today, we’re highlighting Hannah Laithwaite. Hannah undertakes a broad range of civil and commercial work, with her practice primarily spanning the areas of commercial, insolvency, and property. The below is how Hannah started in law and her advice for women looking to break into the field of law.

What made you decide to pursue a career in law?

Embarrassingly, watching too much CSI as a 17-18 year old! Followed by a very encouraging and supportive tutor at university (where I was studying English but had taken a couple of modules from law), who opened my eyes to what a barrister was and how I might go about shadowing the role. I didn’t look back after my first mini pupillage.

How did your career begin?

Undertaking mini-pupillages in different practice areas to get a better idea of what suited my interests, followed by pupillage at a civil set & a move after about 18 months of tenancy to Lamb Chambers in 2016.

What advice would you give to young women about to embark on their legal careers?

Persevere – it is worth the hard work.

Who is one of your role models?

Within the legal profession, perhaps an obvious one, but Baroness Hale. I have met her a few times (once at a IWD event) and found her to be incredibly encouraging of the junior bar, generous with her time and of course, so impressively sharp. Her achievements make it plain what is possible.
