International Women’s Week 2023 at Lamb Chambers. Spotlight: Joanna Kerr

For the last day of our International Women’s Day highlights we are spotlighting Joanna Kerr. Dr Kerr is an Employment and Personal Injury law specialist. Joanna also has experience in the field of Ecclesiastical Law, having appeared in the Consistory Court. The below is how Joanna started in law and her advice for women looking to break into the field of law.

What made you decide to pursue a career in law?

I began my working life as a philosophy academic and in that context I developed a focus on justice and fairness. I became particularly interested in cases arising out of the Hillsborough disaster and the difficulty the judicial system seemed to have in achieving them. I began studying law out of interest but became totally absorbed in it, targeted a career at the bar and here I am!

How did your career begin?

Construction law. I learnt more about the properties of concrete than I ever thought I would need to…

What advice would you give to young women about to embark on their legal careers?

Know your own worth

Who is one of your role models?

Angela Davis – a fearless orator who dances to her own tune
